British Columbia

British Columbia recognizes standard e-bikes and light e-bikes, with different age, power, speed and throttle rules.

AB

Alberta

Alberta classifies compliant e-bikes as power bicycles and uses specific age, helmet, power and speed rules.

SK

Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan treats qualifying power-assisted bicycles as bicycles subject to provincial cycling rules and municipal restrictions.

MB

Manitoba

Manitoba defines power-assisted bicycles in The Highway Traffic Act and sets specific age, helmet, motor and assist controls.

ON

Ontario

Ontario requires riders to be 16+, wear an approved helmet and operate a compliant e-bike under provincial equipment and speed rules.

QC

Quebec

Quebec requires a helmet and applies age/licence conditions to younger e-bike riders, along with 500 W and 32 km/h limits.

NB

New Brunswick

New Brunswick can treat an electric cycle as a bicycle when it is human-powered, 500 W or less and does not assist above 32 km/h.

NS

Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia’s bicycle definition includes certain pedal-equipped electric bicycles with a motor up to 500 W and a 30 km/h assistance threshold.

Prince Edward Island

P.E.I. sets detailed power-assisted bicycle requirements for rider age, equipment, weight, wheel size, power and speed.

Newfoundland and Labrador

Newfoundland and Labrador’s current Highway Traffic Act uses the term power-assisted bicycle, while the detailed public classification framework is less explicit than in several other provinces.
